Woodfire Candle Best Practices

Posted by Kristin Hinrichs on

Did you know there are do's and don'ts to burning candles?

It seems simple, right? You light the candle, let it burn, blow it out. Done. Yes - however, there are a few extra things you should know in order to be a responsible candle owner. Here are some best practices when it comes to burning your Woodfire Candles.

First and foremost  - read your warning label. It's there for a reason, so just give a quick once over just for your own good.

I can't stress this enough - trim your wick. Wicks, especially wood wicks, need trimming. If the wick is too long you could have problems on your hands. Tall wicks create smoke and flames that are too high. Trim your wood wick is before each burn. The black char that is left over from your last burn sesh, will not burn again. If you try to light it, your flame will just fizzle out. I get asked all the time why a wood wick won't stay lit - this is your answer. Simply break off that black char and you'll be good to go.

Let your melt pool reach the edge of your container on your first burn. Soy candles have a memory. Say what? Yep, they will remember where the burn ended and they may not burn past that point on your next burn. This is called tunneling. If this happens to you, it can be fixed, you'll just have to scrape out that extra side wax.

Don't burn your candle all day. This won't benefit you or your candle. If you let your candle burn longer than recommended, you'll end up using up your candle faster than you want to. For an 8oz candle, we recommend not to burn longer than 3-4 hours at a time.

Some candle fragrances are stronger than others. If you aren't getting enough scent from your candle, try burning it in a smaller room or let it burn closer to you. We find that the scent really starts kicking in after burning for a half hour to an hour.

Don't burn your candle in drafty areas, near children or pets, or near anything flammable. Only burn on heat safe surfaces. Extinguish candles before leaving rooms or going to bed. Keep your candle free of any debris or wick trimmings.

That's it. Follow these tips and you'll have safe and happy candle burning experience.
